Management Aptitude Test (MAT)

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standard aptitude test conducted in India since 1998 by the All India Management Association. MAT is used for admission to Master of Business Administration and allied programmes by over 600 business schools across India.

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a National Entrance Test conducted by All India Management Aptitude Testing Service (AIMATS), for admission to MBA and equivalent programmes of the various participating institutes.

To appear in MAT exam, you must have obtained recognized bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration or equivalent in any discipline. Those studying in their final graduation year may also apply. MAT is usually conducted 4 times in a year in February, May, September and December.

Difference between CAT and MAT. MBA entrance exams are many in India. Common Admission Test (CAT) and Management Aptitude Test (MAT) are the two national level MBA entrance exams. CAT is conducted for admission to top tier B-schools in India including IIM’s and MAT is used by next tier of B-schools for admission. CAT is conducted only once a year. However CAT is much tougher to crack compared to MAT as difficulty level of questions is more in the former compared to latter.

The MAT exam consists of objective type questions. The candidates have to select the correct answer out of the options given. There are 5 sections with 200 questions in total. The marking scheme for this test is 1 mark per every correct question and a negative marking of 0.25 marks per every incorrect answer. MAT exam has a total of 200 marks. Every candidate gets one mark for every correct answer and 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer.

A great myth associated with MAT is that it has sectional cut off, but in reality MAT doesn’t have any sectional cut off. This means that if you are lacking performance in let’s say English section then you can easily compensate it by performing well in Quantitative Aptitude section.
